Lesson Objectives:
Pupils should learn:
- The life cycle of a Butterfly
Learning Outcomes:
Pupils will be able to
- Put the life cycle of a Butterfly in order.
- Label the life cycle correctly.
- Use scientific vocabulary related to a Butterfly.
Vocabulary
Life cycle, Butterfly, Pupa, Lava, Caterpillar, Chrysalis
Resources:
- Copy of the Circle of Life playing pieces for each child
- Copy of the game board
- 1 dice per group
- Colouring pencils
- Set of rules per group
- Butterfly kit
Introduction
- Discuss and show the children the circle of life game board.
- What do they notice? (it is a complete circle that keeps going round)
- Explain that this is like the life of a butterfly – ‘A circle of life.’
- Who can tell me what we observed happening in the butterfly kit.
- Discuss the stages the children have observed so far.
- Explain the game
- Children colour their pieces, play the game, collect the pieces and label their diagram.
Plenary
Who managed to collect all their playing pieces in order?
What problems did you have?
Who can explain the life cycle of a Butterfly or Moth?
Do we know of any other creatures which change as much as a butterfly during their lifecycle?
